Sales of half-bottles of wine are soaring as drinkers respond to warnings about alcohol-related health problems. Supermarkets across London report a 100% rise in sales of smaller bottles and are launching new ranges to meet demand.

Pubs are closing down at their fastest rate ever – with those in towns and cities being hit the hardest.
According to the latest QuickBite survey, which tracks meals bought out-of-home, the pub has been pushed into second place by Chinese food as the nation’s favourite way to eat out.
More people are opting for Chinese food, especially takeaways, as disposable income is squeezed by rising bills. Measured over the last four quarters, the annual value of Chinese meals, both takeaway and table-service, amounted to £4.8 billion compared to annual expenditure on pub meals of £4.79 billion.
The age at which people can buy alcohol in Scotland is to be raised to 21 in an effort to curb binge-drinking. The Scottish government has also announced plans to introduce a minimum price for alcohol and to ban buy-one-get-one-free drink promotions in supermarkets to discourage drinking and to cut anti-social behaviour.

According to a joint study by Harris Interactive and Fleishman-Hillard Research, the internet is the most influential of all media channels, beating TV almost two-fold. In the UK, the average response on how influential the internet is was 42%, followed by TV with 23%.The study analysed the media consumption patterns and internet behaviour of 5,000 users across the UK, France and Germany.
However, UK consumers prefer to spend more time watching TV than surfing the internet. For time spent across all media, 38% is devoted to TV, compared to 30% for the internet.
After Budweiser, Jack Daniels too has created its own special barbecue sauces laced with alcohol.

According to a survey of more than 2,000 adults for event planner Wigadoo.com, young professionals no longer have the time to see friends, and instead rely on email to keep in touch.
A third of workers in their 20s and 30s were afraid of organising nights out because they were worried their guests would drop out. Others opted out of socialising because of the time it took to arrange events (25%), laziness (22%) and the difficulty of keeping everyone happy (21%).
A survey of around 1,000 people by Just-Eat.co.uk has shown that Indian meals are by far the favourite British takeaway meal, with Chinese in second and Pizza a close third. Thai food finished fourth with just 3.7% of the votes. Source: Fresh Produce Journal 20-06-2008
