Well it’s chef’s hats off all round for everyone that took part in the Steam agency bake off. Over the past few months it’s been spatulas at dawn, as everyone has competed fiercely for the title and done themselves proud in the kitchen.

But like all good things, it has come to an end and we can finally announce that Steve Lynch – art director – has won the first Steam bake Off Final with his Toblerone Cheesecake, scooping £100 and the coveted golden wooden spoon.

According to the National Barbecue Association (currently promoting an alfresco food fortnight), despite the fact that summer 2007 was the wettest for 250 years, Brits enjoyed 90 million barbecues and two-thirds of households own at least one barbecue.Apparently most families use theirs on around nine occasions during the summer months. Figures show that 49% of barbecues are cooked by women.

British pubs firm Mitchells & Butlers said trading had picked up over the past ten weeks, helped by strong demand for food, a trading update shows.

“Market conditions continue to be characterised by robust demand for good value pub food and associated sales of drinks while on-trade beer market volumes have continued to fall by about 10% over the past quarter,” Mitchells & Butlers said.

The Sex and the City effect has helped cocktails replace cider as the favourite drink among women this summer, according to pub chain Ember Inns. Research by the company found traditional Mojito and Cosmo cocktails to be more popular.

Sarah Sanson, Ember Inns marketing manager, said the Sex and the City film’s box-office success partly explains why women have changed their choice. Cider was the drink in summer 2007 – however in 2008 it looks set to be cocktails.

A survey of 3,000 cheese fans by OnePoll.com has shown that Cheddar is Britain’s most popular cheese.

Cheddar garnered 39% of the votes, beating Brie into second place and Red Leicester into third. The top five list was completed by Dutch Edam and Italian Mozzarella.
