English holidaymakers are turning to drink on their breaks with the average adult consuming eight alcoholic drinks a day, a survey suggests. But 70% of the 3,500 adults questioned by the Department of Health said they plan to make September the “new January” by cutting back.

NHS guidelines advise no more than two to three units a day for women or three to four units for men – roughly equal to a large glass of wine for women and two pints of beer for men. The Know Your Limits campaign survey found that on an average day on holiday, beer drinkers drank five pints, wine drinkers had four glasses of wine, and those who prefer spirits had five mixer drinks, such as vodka and coke.

South coast city Brighton is the happiest place to live in the UK, according to a study for O2 Home Broadband.

94% of Brighton residents said they had a happy home. Brighton residents have all the benefits of living in a city, such as the shopping, culture, restaurants and nightlife, with the bonus of being by the sea. Brighton beat Leeds into second place, followed by Edinburgh, Cardiff and Plymouth. London came ninth and Belfast last in the 17-strong list.

Now, its Mr Retrosexual.According to a new book, The Retrosexual Manual: How To Be A Real Man, women miss the smell of testosterone and yearn for a strong, muscular man and not a man who owns more beauty products than she does. A man who showers, shaves, then gets out of the way is ideal. Retrosexuals open doors for women, and you stand for pregnant women on a bus or train. You do this because you are a man, and you’re proud of it. Retrosexuals do not cook anything more sophisticated than baked beans or Pot Noodles.

According to a study by Clover, families are now so busy that more than half of them do not get to see each other every day.

Meanwhile, one in five people admitted they get to see their families only once a week or less.This lack of time is having an impact on traditional meals with only a third of families sitting down once a day together. Just 18% have time for one to three meals a week with their family – and just 3.5% said they ate together more than twice a day. When together, shopping is the favourite activity for the family.

Birmingham is the UK’s snacking capital where 75% of people give in to temptation and grab a snack when hunger strikes. However, they are healthy snackers – 37% opt for a piece of fruit.Glasgow is home to the UK’s chocoholics with 44% of all Glaswegians eating a chocolate bar to stave off hunger.

Data from a national survey of 8,700 people for the Institute for Public Policy Research reveals family gatherings are much more frequent in the North than the South.

Residents in the North-East, North-West and Yorkshire and Humber regions are significantly more likely to meet relatives at least once a week. Londoners are least likely to have contact with their families, with only 35% visiting relatives weekly compared to a UK average of 49%.

Buckinghamshire has been named as Britain’s best county to live in, according to the Halifax Quality of Life Survey.

Buckinghamshire residents are the healthiest in the country and have every reason to believe they will live into their eighties. Nearly eight in 10 own their own homes and the average salary of £40,000 is in the top five per cent.

According to a survey by National Savings and Investments, men typically spend about £50 on a date, with 40% picking up the whole bill for an evening out.

They splash out an average of £52.51 – compared to the £32.49 which women typically contribute. About 40% of males say they would always expect to pay the whole bill for a night out, but this is something only 17% of women expect.

England will be Europe’s most crowded nation within 25 years, with a fifth more people crammed in, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics. By 2031, there will be 464 men, women and children packed into every square kilometre, compared to 395 today.
