Steam picked up another gold award for the John Smith’s People’s Darts, but this time at the glittering Media Week Awards 2009.

The entry topped the judge’s list for the ‘Collaboration’ category;  a joint effort from Mirror Group Newspapers, Mediavest, SBI and Steam, and now takes Steam’s tally to 3 top awards for this activation.
Steam played a crucial role in getting the idea off the drawing board and into pubs: shaping the logistics, co-ordinating the tasks of all the agencies involved, designing the creative concept and working with the Mirror to ensure all their output adhered to John Smith’s brand values.

Steam UK have helped to set up the groundbreaking John Smith’s People’s Darts tournament; back again for its 2nd year and this year it’s bigger then before: bigger charity prize fund, more participating pubs and clubs, more regional finals and a host of darts pros – Tony ‘Silverback’ O’Shea, Darryl ‘The Dazzler’ Fitton, Ross ‘The Boss’ Montgomery and Trina ‘Golden Girl’ Gulliver – will join the ranks of mentors that coach the eight regional finalists.

The John Smith’s People’s Darts gives everyday pub and club players the chance to play at Lakeside just before the BDO World Championship final in front of a packed house and a TV audience of millions.

Steam UK picked up 2 more gold awards at this year’s ISP Awards held at London’s Hilton Hotel.

Scottish & Newcastle’s John Smith’s People’s Darts took gold in the alcoholic drinks category whilst Jygsaw’s brand, Scrumpy Jack, won the Small Budget Category with their Rural Retreats campaign.

John Smith’s beat Strongbow’s ‘BowTime’ and AB InBev’sDiscover True Dedication’.  The judges were impressed by Scottish & Newcastle’s exploitation of their sponsorship of the World Lakeside BDO Darts Tournament; this saw a unique nationawide pub darts challenge to find 2 finalists to play on stage at Lakeside before the world men’s final.  Rather than just badging an event they were able to fully engage their consumers in a money cant buy experience.

Similar to the People’s Race run at Aintree on Grand National Day, the John Smith’s People’s Darts gives everyday pub and club darts players the opportunity to live their dream – play on the main stage just hours before the BDO Lakeside World Professional Darts Final.

Planned and implemented by Steam UK, the activity was launched to the general public today via a Daily Mirror 4-page centre page pull-out, plus online support.

John Smith’s is launching a limited-edition cask conditioned ale in support of its 250th brewing anniversary celebrations and to mark the 90th birthday of the Royal Air Force.

The ale called Finest Hour will be unveiled at RAF Coningsby,Lincolnshire on 2 September 2008 and the Scottish & Newcastle brand has pledged to donate 10 pence from every sale to the RAF Association’s Wings Appeal.

John Smith’s, racing’s No 1 supporter, is inviting drinkers to celebrate the brand’s continuing sponsorship of the Grand National and the second year of the John Smith’s People’s Race with Winner’s Tipple, new limited edition premium ale. Winner’s Tipple, which was launched at the 2008 John Smith’s Grand National weights lunch will be available from March in selected on and off trade outlets in draught cask, conditioned and 500 ml bottle formats. John Smith’s through-the-line agency, Steam, named the product and designed the bottle label and pump clip with the brand’s No Nonsense values in mind.
