English holidaymakers are turning to drink on their breaks with the average adult consuming eight alcoholic drinks a day, a survey suggests. But 70% of the 3,500 adults questioned by the Department of Health said they plan to make September the “new January” by cutting back.

NHS guidelines advise no more than two to three units a day for women or three to four units for men – roughly equal to a large glass of wine for women and two pints of beer for men. The Know Your Limits campaign survey found that on an average day on holiday, beer drinkers drank five pints, wine drinkers had four glasses of wine, and those who prefer spirits had five mixer drinks, such as vodka and coke.

The result is weekends turning into “workends”. A growing number of workers spend almost as much time catching up on household and family duties on their days off as they put into a normal day at the office, according to research commissioned by Dulux Paint.Three out of four adults believe the weekend is now merely an extension to the working week rather than a separate time for them to enjoy.

Millions of Britons are putting in a six-hour day every Saturday and Sunday on paying bills, grocery shopping, humdrum housework, fixing the lawnmower and all the other jobs they no longer have time to do in the week. More time commuting, longer hours in the office and a change in women’s roles from housekeeper to breadwinner mean today’s generation no longer keeps on top of daily jobs round the home.
